Santa Barbara County’s Central Board of Architectural Review has granted preliminary approval for El Capitan Canyon Campground west of Goleta to expand.

The campground at 11560 Calle Real off Highway 101 features cedar cabins and yurts, as well as the Canyon Market and a wide array of activities, such as hiking trails, a swimming pool, wine tasting, a summer concert series, and more.

The campground also already has a 5,716-square-foot multi-function support building and a 3,394-square-foot vehicle and equipment carport.

According to the Central Board of Architectural Review agenda from Friday’s meeting, expansion plans for El Capitan Canyon Campground include the construction of 22 RV cabins, 17 yurts, a 1,200-square-foot campground support building, an 1,800-square-foot camper services building, a 2,700-square-foot camper services barn and a 592-square-foot comfort station.

The campground boasts its “luxury” cabins and yurts for a glamping experience in the 350-acre oak and sycamore tree grove along the coast.

“Our goal is to nurture an environment in harmony with the nature and history of the canyon while allowing our guests to enjoy a relaxing Santa Barbara beach camping experience,” El Capitan Canyon’s website states. “The camp is designed to be an antidote to all that is excessive, formal, artificial or contrived.”

The campground’s proposed expansion is now set to return to the Central Board of Architectural Review for final approval at a later date.
