Friendship Center Adult Day Services

Question: What year was your business established?

Answer: 1976.

Q: What inspired you to start your business, and how does it cater to the needs of the 55+ community?

A: Friendship Center was founded in 1976 with the commitment that adults living with dementia deserve more than just care—they deserve connection, dignity, and a place to belong.

Dementia, a collection of cognitively impairing symptoms caused by conditions like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease, brings changes that can make the world feel smaller, isolating both the person experiencing it and their loved ones.

Friendship Center set out to change that by creating a warm, welcoming space where individuals can continue to engage in meaningful activities, socialize, and feel valued.

We call our program participants members because that’s exactly who they are—members of our community, members of our family. Our person-centered model of care ensures that each day is shaped around what brings them joy, honoring their unique interests, abilities, and preferences.

Whether it’s a morning nature walk, a beach outing, or simply enjoying the sunshine in our lush Montecito courtyard, we create opportunities for connection and purpose. At the same time, we offer family caregivers the respite they need, giving them peace of mind knowing their loved ones are in a safe and enriching environment.

Aging well isn’t just about living longer—it’s about living fully. That’s what we strive to support every day.

Q: What unique products or services do you offer that help seniors live well and age wisely?

A: Friendship Center offers something truly rare—exceptional, dignified dementia care in a beautiful setting that remains both accessible and affordable.

In a landscape where high-quality memory care can be costly and difficult to find, we provide a warm, enriching environment where individuals living with dementia can thrive, and families can find the support they need.

Our adult day program itself is unique. Unlike traditional long-term care models, adult day programs are the most responsive, adaptive, and preferred form of senior care in the country.

By offering structured, engaging activities tailored to personal interests, cultural backgrounds, and diverse needs, we ensure each member feels seen, valued, and fulfilled. Our approach nurtures physical abilities, emotional well-being, and cognitive stimulation through music, art, movement, and social connection—all in a safe and welcoming space.

Most importantly, our program helps older adults age in place—staying in the homes and communities they’ve built, surrounded by the people they love, for as long as possible. By providing expert respite care during the day, we empower older adults to keep their loved ones at home while ensuring they receive the support and engagement they need.

Q: How does your business support seniors in staying active, healthy, or engaged in their community?

A: Being an active part of the community can become a challenge as we age, whether we like it or not. Friendship Center focuses on finding new ways to feel active and a part of the community through purposeful activities, engagement, and peer connections.

As a social model adult day program, we have the unique opportunity to design the daily activities around what makes our members feel valued, respected, and happy.

Whether it’s through live music or art, pet therapy visits or exercise classes, cultural and social events or even a coastal bike rides with our Cycling Without Age friends, we bring the best of the Santa Barbara community and beyond to our members.

Q: Can you share a success story or testimonial from a senior who benefited from your services?

A: “Having my dad attend the Friendship Center has been the only way I am able to continue working. I simply would not be able to afford the in-home care rates required to care for him on a daily basis.

The Friendship Center offers this care, the feedings, and social stimulation. But the Friendship Center is so much more than that! They provide warmth, reassurance, and kindness which is so imperative for a dementia patient to feel. The staff are fantastic at getting to know members on an individual basis and adjust care to that person’s needs. I witness this all the time.

There is always genuine excitement and a smile at drop off which puts my dad at ease immediately. The creative social interactions and activities they provide make this a wonderful place for anybody, young or old, to want to attend.

Lastly, the care that the staff at Friendship Center provides extends beyond just the members. They also provide support for the caregivers too. From passing on helpful information regarding support services, or making connections for families to support one another, to even just offering a listening ear or a hug. The Friendship Center is an absolute blessing to our family!.” -Angelica C.

Q: What trends are you seeing in the senior market, and how is your company adapting to meet those needs?

A: The majority of those seeking our services are adults caring for a spouse or partner—a role that can be both deeply meaningful and incredibly demanding. As people live longer, more families are navigating the challenges of dementia care at home, often without the resources or support they need.

At the same time, we’re seeing a rise in adult children stepping into caregiving roles while juggling careers and raising families of their own—the so-called “sandwich generation.” To meet these evolving needs, Friendship Center is expanding outreach efforts to ensure caregivers know help is available.

Through enhanced social media, marketing, and community education, we’re reaching spouses, adult children, friends and family members alike, offering respite, resources, and a sense of peace that can be otherwise unobtainable.

Q: What advice do you have for seniors looking to improve their quality of life or achieve their goals?

A: Engaging with the world—through movement, conversation, or even simple sensory experiences—is one of the best ways to maintain well-being at any age. Whether it’s sipping coffee at a café, listening to birds chirp on a morning walk, trying a new food, or sharing a smile with a stranger, these moments help keep the mind and spirit engaged.

We know that obstacles that might come with age, such as dementia and related memory conditions, can make engaging with the world feel overwhelming—but that’s exactly why Friendship Center exists.

We provide a safe, welcoming space where seniors can stay connected through music, conversation, art, and time outdoors. Social interaction doesn’t have to be complicated—just being present in a shared space with others can spark joy and a sense of belonging.

So, if you’re looking to improve your quality of life, start small. Step outside, engage your senses, and connect with the world around you; and if you need some help with that, we are here!

Q: How does your business prioritize accessibility, affordability, or personalization for older adults?

A: At Friendship Center, we believe that high-quality dementia care should be available to everyone, regardless of income. That’s why we offer a sliding scale fee structure, scholarships, and flexible schedules to meet the financial needs of families. We are also VA-approved, meaning eligible veterans can attend at no cost.

Most importantly, no one is turned away due to inability to pay—something that sets us apart in a world where memory care can be prohibitively expensive.

Beyond affordability, we prioritize personalization. Dementia affects every person differently, so our person-centered approach ensures that each member’s day reflects their unique interests, abilities, and cultural background.

By combining affordability, accessibility, and truly individualized care, Friendship Center provides a one-of-a-kind place where older adults can thrive and families can find the support they need.

Q: Are there specific programs, events, or offers you’d like our readers to know about?

A: Our Adult Day Program is the heart of Friendship Center, providing a safe, engaging, and enriching environment for adults living with dementia or other cognitive and physical impairments.

Through music, art, movement, and social activities, we ensure each member experiences meaningful connection while giving family caregivers much-needed respite.

Beyond our day program, we offer additional specialized services:

Connections & Pathways: These small-group programs provide social engagement and cognitive stimulation in a supportive setting. Connections is designed for individuals in the very early stages of memory changes, offering engaging discussions, brain fitness activities, and guest speakers.

Pathways, our newest group, is tailored for those with mild to moderate cognitive impairment who benefit from a structured but lively setting with art, reminiscence, and conversation.

Herencia Latina: ¡Un grupo social culturalmente enriquecedor para adultos mayores de habla hispana! Este programa celebra la herencia y tradiciones de nuestros miembros a través de música, actividades de memoria, y conexión social.

Carpinteria Healthy Aging Hub: This community-focused initiative brings older adults together for intergenerational interactions, wellness programs, and engaging activities designed to strengthen social connections and support healthy aging.

Caregiver Support & Resources: We provide more than just support groups—we offer education, resource navigation, peer buddy connections, and practical strategies to help caregivers navigate the challenges of dementia care. Whether through one-on-one guidance or group workshops, we empower families with the knowledge and support they need.

Q: Are there government benefits or programs you think seniors often overlook?

A: There are so many programs designed to support seniors, but they often don’t get the attention they deserve.

That’s why Friendship Center has been expanding as a resource hub, helping families connect with financial assistance, medical support, wellness programs, and caregiving resources.

We are regularly adding to our new virtual resource hub at fcsb.org/resources and also maintain a resource library on-site at our program site, 89 Eucalyptus Lane.

Caregiving Resources

Q: What resources do you offer to support caregivers of seniors?

A: Dementia Resource Hub: Our Dementia Resource Hub is an evolving initiative aimed at providing trusted, accessible information on dementia care, financial assistance, wellness programs, housing options, and more. Families can explore our virtual resource hub at fcsb.org/resources or visit our on-site resource library to find tools and guidance tailored to their needs.

Caregiver Education & Peer Support: We offer ongoing support groups, educational sessions, and peer mentoring programs to help caregivers navigate the challenges of dementia care. Workshops cover essential topics like managing behaviors, self-care, and in-home care strategies.

Coffee for Caregivers: Every third Wednesday of the month, we host an informal gathering where caregivers can enjoy coffee, ask questions, and share experiences in a welcoming, supportive environment.

Q: How can caregivers balance their responsibilities while maintaining their own well-being?

A: Caregiving is an act of love, but it can also be physically and emotionally exhausting. Finding balance starts with recognizing that your well-being matters too.

Some steps to help you help yourself:

Prioritize Respite Time – Taking regular breaks is not a luxury—it’s essential. Whether it’s through Friendship Center, home care support, or family help, scheduling time for yourself prevents burnout and allows you to recharge.

Stay Connected – Caregiving can feel isolating, but staying engaged with friends, support groups, or peer networks can provide emotional relief and encouragement. Talking to others who understand your challenges makes a difference.

Set Boundaries & Accept Help – You don’t have to do it all. Be realistic about what you can manage, and accept help when it’s offered. If friends or family ask how they can support you, give them specific tasks—whether it’s running errands, sitting with your loved one, or providing a meal.

Take Care of Your Health – Caregivers often put their own needs last, but your physical and mental health are just as important as your loved one’s. Schedule your own doctor’s appointments, get enough sleep, eat well, and move your body, even if it’s just a short walk.

Engage in Meaningful Self-Care – Self-care doesn’t have to be extravagant. It can be enjoying a cup of coffee in peace, listening to music, practicing deep breathing, journaling, or doing something creative. Small moments of joy can have a big impact on your well-being.

Q: Do you provide training or education for families caring for aging loved ones?

A: We have a new Dementia Resource Hub that offers onsite & virtual library of trusted resources, 1 on 1 care consultations with dementia specialists, resource navigation & support, educational workshops, and caregiver support groups.

Educational Opportunities

Q: What lifelong learning opportunities do you offer for seniors looking to expand their knowledge or skills?

A: At Friendship Center, lifelong learning happens in ways that inspire curiosity and joy in the moment. Our members enjoy guest speakers, interactive discussions, and hands-on experiences that bring new ideas to life.

From science and travel talks to storytelling, humor, and music, every day is an opportunity to discover something new.

These sessions spark connection and conversation, helping members stay engaged with the world around them.

Dancing, movement, community outings and outdoor walks Art, music, and interactive storytelling Small discussion groups that spark conversation and reminiscence

Q: Are there any upcoming classes, workshops, or events you’d like to highlight?
