An inmate who escaped from the Main Jail over the weekend was captured Monday night in San Luis Obispo, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department.
Joshua Camarillo-Sanchez, 23, of Santa Maria was taken into custody at about 10:30 p.m. at a motel on the 1000 block of Olive Street, said Raquel Zick, sheriff’s public information officer.
Sanchez broke out of the jail near Goleta shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday.
Zick said that “for safety and security reasons” she could not disclose how Camarillo-Sanchez was able to leave the jail.
He was booked back into the jail late Monday night, with new charges including escape from jail and conspiracy, both felonies, and violation of a court order, a misdemeanor, Zick said.
Also on Monday night, deputies arrested two Santa Maria women for allegedly helping Camarillo-Sanchez escape.
“Sheriff’s detectives were assigned and worked with custody staff to quickly identify a probable accomplice in Camarillo-Sanchez’s escape, 24-year-old Angelli Mariah Roman from Santa Maria,” Zick said. “Detectives learned that Camarillo-Sanchez planned his escape with Roman, who waited near the Main Jail in a getaway vehicle.”
Roman was tracked to the Santa Maria area, where she was taken into custody during a traffic stop near the intersection of Lincoln and Orchard streets for outstanding warrants, as well as felony charges of conspiracy, being an accessory, and aiding in the escape of a prisoner, Zick said.
Detectives also arrested a passenger in Roman’s vehicle — Janelle Dantane Hodges, 24 — on suspicion of being an accessory, Zick added.
Both women were booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail.
Roman remained in custody Tuesday afternoon, with bail set at $15,000, while Hodges was released without bail.
Camarillo-Sanchez is awaiting trial on a variety of domestic-violence charges, as well as assault with a deadly weapon, according to Santa Barbara Superior Court records, which show he has a lengthy rap sheet.
He had been in custody since January 2021, and his bail is now set at $1,390,000.
