Northbound Highway 101 was shut down north of Ventura Monday morning after a fiery fatal collision, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash — involving a Honda CRV and a utility truck, and possibly two other vehicles — occurred shortly before 9:30 a.m. near the Padre Juan Canyon Road overcrossing, the CHP said.
One of the involved vehicles caught on fire and became engulfed in flames, the CHP said.
At least one person was killed, but information was not available about other injuries.
The northbound freeway was shut down at about 10 a.m., and vehicles were being diverted onto Highway 1 at the state beaches exit, with a detour to Highway 33 and Highway 150, the CHP said.
Shortly before 2:30 p.m., one northbound lane was reopened, according to Caltrans.
Ventura County firefighters were dispatched to the incident, and personnel from the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene.
Additional details were not available.
The crash occurred in the same area where a 76-year-old Santa Barbara motorcyclist was killed in a crash last week.
According to the CHP, Richard Vincent was northbound at about 8 p.m. Wednesday when, for unknown reasons, he veered from the traffic lane and struck the K-rail separating the right split traffic lane from a construction area.
Vincent was ejected from the motorcycle and was declared dead at the scene.
That crash occurred in the area of the new traffic split associated with a roadway-reconstruction project on Highway 101.
