One person was killed Friday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 166 along the border of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties east of Santa Maria.

Emergency crews responded to the crash scene near Willow Spring Trail shortly after 5 p.m. for a report of a vehicle that had plunged approximately 200 feet over the side of the highway.

Santa Barbara County Fire Department Capt. Mike Gray confirmed one deceased person had been found, and a search was underway for other possible victims.

The victim’s name was not released pending notification of relatives.

Highway 166 was reduced to one lane in the area for a time.

The vehicle involved reportedly was a gray Toyota Camry, per emergency radio traffic.

The crash was under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
