Favi Rosales of the Channel League-champion San Marcos boys soccer team and Bishop Diego basketball’s Lily Simolon were honored as the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Rosales scored a late game-winning goal for a 2-1 victory over Buena to keep the Royals unbeaten in league play.
In a crosstown rivalry game against Santa Barbara High, he tallied the go-ahead goal in a 5-1 win that clinched a third straight league title for San Marcos. The Royals are 12-0 in league.
“He’s been an essential player for us,” said San Marcos assistant coach Genaro Hernandez of Rosales, who has scored eight goals while coming off the bench.
Simolon came up big for Bishop Diego in the fourth quarter of a 43-36 win against St. Bonaventure in a key Tri-Valley League game. She scored 10 of her 15 points in the quarter, including a three-point play late in the game four free throws.
“She was not going to let us lose,” said coach Jeff Burich.
The Cardinals’ win clinched a CIF playoff spot. They are 20-3 on the season and 4-1 in league. They play at 5-0 Foothill Tech on Thursday.
