Ten-year-old Quinn Hensley, a fifth-grader at Washington Elementary School, took second place in the California State Elementary Spelling Championship on Saturday.
According to the Sonoma County Office of Education, 61 of the top elementary school spellers, representing 32 California counties, participated in the competition, held on the Sonoma State University campus in Rohnert Park.
Quinn took home a trophy and a $500 savings bond.
His achievement follows Kelvin Noronha’s first-place win May 10 at the junior high school level of the state competition. Noronha is a La Colina Junior High School student. He received a trophy and a $1,000 savings bond.
