A two-alarm structure fire at an apartment building in Vandenberg Village displaced 20 people and damaged multiple units Wednesday morning.

At approximately 4 a.m., personnel from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department along with their counterparts from Lompoc and Vandenberg Space Force Base fire departments were dispatched to 3900 block of Mesa Circle Drive, county fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.

A resident with a working smoke detector called 9-1-1 to report the fire, which involved four apartment units, Safechuck said. Responding firefighters evacuated the entire building during the blaze, he added.

The fire generated a large column of smoke before crews had knocked down the blaze 40 minutes after being dispatched.

Four apartments had heavy fire damage with four others left with significant damage due to water, Safechuck added.

A total of 18 adults, two children, five dogs and one cat have been displaced from their homes due to the fire, Safechuck said.

Red Cross was notified to assist the displaced residents, Safechuck added.

After knocking down the blaze, firefighting personnel and equipment remained at the scene to complete mop-up operations.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Safechuck added.
