Firefighters working to corral a Friday night fire on the western edge of the Santa Maria Valley stopped the forward movement of the flames within an hour.

At approximately 10:20 p.m., personnel from the Santa Barbara County Fire and Santa Maria Fire departments responded to the incident on Brown Road at Highway 1, County Fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.

Crews were making a direct attack on the approximately 18-acre fire burning in a field of dry grass with a moderate rate of spread, Safechuck said.

Firefighters also were working to flank the flames with hose lines and water, he added.

They also planned to take advantage of a plowed field and a road to help stop the fire’s advance.

A video of the fire showed huge flames and a large amount of smoke due to the blaze.

Additionally, a bulldozer and a hand crew were dispatched to help battle the blaze.

No structures were threatened, he added.

Law enforcement officers also responded to the area to provide traffic control.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
