A fire damaged a single-story house in one of Santa Maria’s older neighborhoods on Sunday morning.

At approximately 8:35 a.m., personnel from the Santa Maria Fire Department were dispatched to the 500 block of South Lincoln Street near Orange Street, Battalion Chief Seth Wells said.

Firefighters arrived to find flames coming from a window and smoke in the attic — “It was a fully involved working structure fire,” Wells added.

The house had plywood boards covering windows before the fire started.

“No one’s supposed to be living in there. We have had issues with people living inside there after it’s been boarded up,” Wells added.

He estimated the structure was built more than 100 years ago.

As they extinguished the blaze, firefighters also kept the flames from spreading to nearby residences.

Crews determined no one was inside the home when they arrived, and reported no firefighters or civilians were injured in the incident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Wells said.

Crews from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department and Cal Fire also responded to the city to handle other incidents while the Santa Maria firefighters battled the blaze.

Santa Maria police officers and American Medical Response personnel were dispatched to assist at the scene.
