Nine people were displaced early Sunday after a fire destroyed a single-story, multi-family residence in Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara City Fire Department.

Firefighters and other emergency personnel responded at about 5:20 a.m. to the 300 block of North Alisos Street for a report of a building engulfed in flames, said fire Battalion Chief Cory Cloud.

The first of four engines was on scene within four minutes, Cloud said. He added that all occupants were evacuated safely.

Initially, no injuries were reported. Cloud confirmed that later in the morning, one of the occupants returned to the scene on foot and reported minor burn injuries. That person was evaluated at the scene.

Four cars parked outside the building also were heavily damaged or destroyed.

A Noozhawk photographer on the scene said the roof of the structure collapsed.

The fire was knocked down and crews were still on scene as of 8:20 a.m., Cloud said.

The cause was under investigation.

Additional information was not immediately available.
