A vegetation fire burned approximately 37 acres in the Cuyama Valley, one of two tackled by firefighters in the small community Monday afternoon.
At approximately 2:30 p.m., personnel from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, Los Padres National Forest, California Highway Patrol and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident off Highway 166.
Firefighters responded from the scene of a previous spot fire caused by a power line down, county fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.
Crews quickly attacked the flames, after getting help from property owners assisting by providing two water trucks and a grader, according to emergency dispatch reports.
Shortly after 3 p.m., incident commanders canceled most resources but said firefighters likely would remain on the scene for a while to complete mop up chores.
Fixed-wing aircraft were canceled but at least one helicopter responded to remain on standby in case of flare-ups and to assess the area from above.
Traffic on Highway 166, which typically is extremely busy at the end of three-day holiday weekends since it links the Central Coast and southern San Joaquin Valley, was affected by the firefighting effort.
An hour earlier, firefighters were dispatched to the intersection of Highway 166 and Bell Road for another small vegetation fire.
While downed power lines likely started the first fire, the second blaze’s cause was blamed on a vehicle being towed with an RV, Safechuck added.
Additional details weren’t immediately available.
