Firefighters responded Thursday evening to a vegetation fire burning along Highway 101 at Gaviota, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
The blaze was reported shortly after 5:30 p.m. near the southbound highway lanes at Mariposa Reina, County Fire spokeswoman Karen Cruz-Orduña said.
The blaze blackened about an acre before the forward progress of the flames was stopped, according to emergency radio traffic.
An evacuation warning was issued for nearby Gaviota State Beach, but it was later rescinded.
The right-hand southbound highway lane was closed for a time because of fire equipment in the area.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
