Firefighters responded Friday to a kitchen fire at an apartment on Santa Barbara’s Eastside, according to the Santa Barbara City Fire Department.

Crews were dispatched shortly before 10 a.m. to the fire at a two-story apartment complex on the 300 block of South Voluntario Street.

They found light smoke in a single unit, and traced it to a fire in the oven, fire Battalion Chief Robert Mercado told Noozhawk.

Firefighters quickly doused the flames and limited the damage mainly to the stove and surrounding area.

The occupants were at home at the time, and were alerted to the fire by a bystander banging on the door, Mercado said.

He added that the unit has a smoke detector, but it was not functional.

The occupants were able to safely exit the apartment, and no injuries were reported in the incident.

Surrounding apartment units were evacuated until firefighters controlled the fire.
