Five people were injured when a vehicle struck large rocks and flipped onto its side on Highway 101 in Gaviota late Saturday night.
Emergency personnel, including from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol, responded at approximately 10:45 p.m. to the incident on northbound Highway 101, a half mile north of the Gaviota tunnel, county fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.
A sport utility vehicle flipped onto its side after hitting some of the rocks that fell onto the roadway, Safechuck added.
Two males and three females self extricated from the vehicle and were transported via two American Medical Response ambulances to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment of minor to moderate injuries, Safechuck said.
A second vehicle also was damaged after hitting rocks, but no one in that vehicle was injured.
One lane of the roadway remained closed for a time due to the crash.
