As summer comes to an end, it’s important to consider how your child will spend time outside of school hours. Fortunately, Santa Barbara County has an array of after-school programs to suit many different personalities and interests.

After-school programs give students an opportunity to continue their education, learn important life skills, and socialize with kids their same age. In addition, after-school programs can be a fun way for students to explore new subjects and hobbies.

Here are five Santa Barbara County after-school programs to consider for your child.

Channel Islands YMCA

When it comes to after-school programs, few names are as well known as the Y. Its programs focus on academic support, healthy habits, sports, recreation, science, math, and leadership.

“The YMCA Before & Afterschool Program balances the needs of youth, families and local schools in a fully licensed, supportive and nurturing environment,” according to Channel Islands YMCA. “We believe that children should have meaningful experiences and activities that complement and expand their school experience. We also understand the role that YMCA staff play in exposing youth to positive role models who build their self-esteem and sense of community.”

Ensemble Theatre Company

For young people who enjoy being on a stage, the Ensemble Theatre Company offers classes for ages 8 and older. In the acting class, students will study with award winning actor Brian McDonald. They will participate in solo and group activities that culminate in a final showcase.

“Whether you are an aspiring actor or just want to try something new, ETC students will find themselves at ease in this supportive environment as they expand their creative comfort zone and hone their performance skills,” according to Ensemble Theatre Company.

Santa Barbara Dance Arts

For 25 years, Santa Barbara Dance Arts has been a hub for the arts. Youth classes and camps support the studio’s belief that dance lessons teach life lessons. SB Dance Arts provides options for students of all skill levels with its membership Growth Program, First Steps Program, and Small Bites Program.

“Our dancers go beyond technique to develop important life skills and confidence while finding belonging and friendship,” according to Santa Barbara Dance Arts. “We believe that dance is not only a beautiful art form but also a powerful tool for personal growth and development. Engaging in dance provides many physical and emotional benefits that go well beyond the classroom.”

Santa Barbara Trapeze Co.

An exciting opportunity for students is the chance to learn acrobatics. At Santa Barbara Trapeze Co., students learn the skills necessary to fly trapeze in addition to learning important life skills.

Girls Inc.

Girls Inc. is all about inspiring girls to be strong, smart, and bold. After-school programs are designed to help girls learn valuable skills that can define their lives.

“We focus on the development of the whole girl,” according to Girls Inc. “She learns to value herself, take risks, and discover and develop her inherent strengths and leadership skills. The combination of long-lasting mentoring relationships, a pro-girl environment, and evidence-based programming form The Girls Inc. Experience, which equips girls and teens to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers, and grow up healthy, educated, and independent.”
