San Marcos flag football came away with a crucial 12-0 victory over Ventura High on Tuesday at Larabee Stadium in Ventura.
The win evened the Royals and Cougars, who split their season series, at 4-5 in Channel League play for a tie for third place. The two teams will face off again in a tiebreaking game on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Warkentin Stadium, with the winner taking an automatic bid into the CIF-SS playoffs.
Tuesday’s matchup got off to a slow start, as neither team scored in the opening quarter.
San Marcos’ offense then woke up in the second half, powered by the duo of Victoria Aldana and Maya Llewellyn. The pairing connected on a 36-yard pass to get down the field before Aldana found Llewellyn for a 24-yard touchdown and a 6-0 lead.
On the next possession, Llewellyn stepped in front of a pass for an interception and returned it all the way down to the Ventura 8-yard line.
Two plays later, Aldana hit Scarlett Holian in the back of the end zone for a 12-0 lead, which held into halftime.
The San Marcos defense then took center stage in the second half, locking down the Cougar attack en route to the shutout win.
Norah Leonardi led the Royals’ defense with two sacks and seven flag pulls, while Milana Lynn added an interception of her own. Jasmine Rollman also had a strong night punting the ball.
On the offensive end, Victoria Aldana completed 17-of-28 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns.
