Flooding forced the evacuation of several homes in an Orcutt neighborhood Monday evening.

At approximately 5 p.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters were dispatched to the 4200 block of Hibiscus Court, off Parkland Drive a block east of South Bradley Road, with assistance requested from Santa Maria firefighters and county sheriff’s deputies.

Water was streaming through the campus of nearby St. Joseph High School, at 4120 S. Bradley Road, and Parkland Drive residents also were calling for help.

One woman was trapped in a vehicle in the area.

Water estimated to be about two feet deep affected the area, with an apparent sinkhole on Union Valley Parkway near the end of the Hibiscus Court cul-de-sac, authorities said.

Overflowing stormwater retention basins reportedly were causing the troubles, and county flood control and road crews were dispatched to assist.

Hours earlier, at least one basin had started spilling onto nearby roads.
