Santa Barbara County could see rain early next week from a potentially strong storm system, but forecasters say it’s too soon to know how much, or whether it will materialize at all.

The National Weather Service says a low-pressure system dropping in from the north could bring anything from light showers to several inches of rain to Santa Barbara County between Monday night and Wednesday, depending on the storm’s exact track.

Tuesday currently appears to have the highest chances for precipitation.

“Tuesday, the rain could hit anywhere. It could also hit nowhere,” said NWS meteorologist Kristan Lund during a Thursday briefing. “We just want people to be prepared.”

Forecasters are monitoring a wide spread in model outcomes and stressed that it is “too soon to be specific.”

“We are seeing models showing very light rain and then we have some that are showing upwards of three, four, five inches in certain locations,” Lund said.

If the heavier scenarios materialize, Lund says flooding and debris flows could become a concern, especially near recent burn scars.

Forecasters said they hope to have a clearer picture by Sunday morning to help guide potential preparations, though even then, scenarios could range significantly.
