Former Santa Barbara High pitcher Derek True was selected No. 554 overall by the Houston Astros in the 18th Round of the 2023 MLB Draft on Tuesday.
The selection follows True’s decision to transfer from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to the University of Georgia. He announced the move over the weekend on his Instagram account.
True has a choice of finishing his collegiate career at the SEC program or sign a pro contract and join the minor league system of the Astros.
After a successful career as a Don that ended in a Channel League MVP, True pitched for Cal Poly for four seasons, including the shortened 2020 COVID year. He came out of the bullpen for the majority of his Mustangs career.
The righthander had his best season in 2023, when he pitched 33 innings in relief, striking out 39 and logging a 4.09 ERA.
True was drafted by the Oakland A’s in 2022 and opted to return for his senior season at Cal Poly.
The MLB Draft concludes on Tuesday with a total of 20 rounds.
