Partners in Education is offering a free six-week Computer Basics Training in English and Spanish, part of an ongoing series of courses hosted throughout Santa Barbara County to help job seekers, current workers, and small business operators improve their skills. The program is designed for adult learners who want to feel more comfortable using computers, whether in their current job or helping their children with schoolwork.
Participants will learn how to:
- use the Internet to fill out online forms, including setting up appointments and applying for jobs
- find and adjust computer settings such as display, volume, and printer options
- connect to Wi-Fi or the Internet
- send and receive emails
Upon completion of the training, participants will receive a new Chromebook.
The course will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:30 p.m. from Oct. 7 to Nov. 14 at the River View Townhomes, 230 Calle Cesar E Chavez, in Guadalupe. To register, contact Alondra Rodriguez at (805) 964-4710 ext. 4401, call or text (805) 724-0447, or email partners@sbceo.org.
In a recent course held in Lompoc, participants said they gained valuable knowledge to better support their families, advance their education, and qualify for higher-paying jobs.
Santa Barbara County Superintendent of Schools Susan Salcido said, “We are pleased to learn that the training in Lompoc was a success and look forward to expanding our reach into the Guadalupe region. We know that when parents and guardians support their children with schoolwork, we see improved academic outcomes. By training parents and other adults to use the devices and technology that our students are using, we improve the student’s likelihood of succeeding in school and beyond graduation.”
This coursework was created by the Economic Development Collaborative, a 501(c)3 nonprofit committed to fostering economic development and enhancing regional quality of life across the California Central Coast. The curriculum and materials were made possible by State Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, who developed this concept and secured $5 million in state general funds for a digital upskilling pilot in Ventura County.
