As part of its ongoing efforts to improve child safety in vehicles, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), along with Marian Regional Medical Center, and Santa Maria Police Department, will conduct a child seat check-up event 10 a.m.-2 p.m. May 18 at the Santa Maria Town Center, old Sears parking lot, 371 Town Center E.
The free safety check will focus on proper installation of rear-facing infant seats, forward-facing child seats, and booster seats.
The event will include car seat inspection and education by certified Child Passenger Safety technicians.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends keeping children rear-facing as long as possible up to the top height or weight allowed by their particular seats.
Once a child outgrows the rear-facing car seat and they are two years of age, they are ready to travel in a forward-facing car seat with a harness.
After outgrowing the car seat, children should be placed in a booster seat until they are 8 years of age or 4-feet, 9-inches tall. It is recommended that children stay in booster seats until they reach the required age or height and until they fit properly while using a seat belt.
The safest place for all children under age 13 is in the back seat of the vehicle.
All parents and caregivers are invited to attend the Santa Maria event. Bring your child, car seat, car seat’s manual, and vehicle owner’s manual.
