Freshman Leo Metzger shot a 2-under par 69 to earn medalist honors in his debut for San Marcos at Rancho San Marcos Golf Course, but the Royals lost their season opener to a strong Newbury Park team, 385-448.
“I think there was some nerves in the beginning of the round as a bunch of our guys got off to rough starts, but did a good job of staying focused and improving throughout the day,” said coach Jeff Ashton.
The Royals play Buena at Olivas Links on Thursday.
