With a balanced attack and strong freshman contributions, host Laguna Blanca swept Cate, 25-11, 25-13, 25-15, in a Tri-Valley League boys volleyball match Thursday.
Tyson Deveze, a freshman, and Kincade Avery both had seven kills. Caden Weaver added six kills on seven swings and errors and a .857 percentage.
Freshman Liam Knezevic had 19 assists and three aces.
“Some of our younger players stepped up and shined in tonight’s match,” Laguna Blanca assistant coach Kat Niksto said.
“Caden had a stellar night offensively, hitting near-perfect, while Carson Bohnet and Grant Withee got some solid reps in on the outside and middle respectively.”
Laguna Blanca rises to 2-0 in league play and 3-0 overall. The Owls play at the Chadwick Tournament on Saturday.
San Marcos Sweeps Cabrillo
The San Marcos boys swept Cabrillo Thursday, 25-13, 25-12, and 25-13, in their Channel League opener.
“Spencer McLean did a great job from the service line and on defense tonight,” Royals coach Roger Kuntz said. “Sophomore Cliff Ficker also contributed by leading the team in kills on the night.”
San Marcos is now 7-4 overall on the season. The Royals host Westlake in a non-league match on Tuesday.
Short-Handed Bishop Diego Falls to Rio Mesa
The short-handed Bishop Diego boys, with just seven players, fell to an experienced Rio Mesa team in a non-league match Thursday, 25-12, 25-17, 25-13.
“By the end of the second game, we had committed 37 errors, so we just tried to focus on executing good plays,” Cardinals coach Dillan Bennett said. “We’ve got a lot of learning to do, and we’re excited to head down to the Chadwick Tournament on Saturday, as we welcome back several key players to the active roster.”
Laguna Blanca is now 1-4 overall, and 1-0 in Tri-Valley League play.
