A strong second quarter powered Bishop Diego girls basketball to a 58-47 win over local foe Carpinteria High in the Royal Classic on Friday in Simi Valley.
While three of the four quarters were decided by one possession, the Cardinals outscored the Warriors 20-10 in the second and that proved to be the difference in the win.
While Jeisa Coronado led Bishop Diego with 18 points, Alyssa Chrestenson dominated the painted area with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Luz Castro also scored 12 points, and Yessenia Mendez provided a needed spark in the fourth quarter.
“We did a great job rebounding in the second half,” Bishop Diego head coach Jeff Burich said. “That was the difference. We didn’t give them as many second chances in the second half.”
Charlotte Cooney dropped 23 points to lead the Warrior attack, while Amalia Castaneda chipped in 10 points.
“We fought hard but still need work on sustaining and matching our execution with our effort,” Carpinteria High head coach Henry Gonzales said.
The Cardinals (7-1) will take on Agoura on Saturday, while the Warriors (3-3) will face off with Simi Valley on Saturday at 1 p.m.
San Marcos 55, Newport Harbor 27
The Royals dominated on the defensive end en route to a non-league win over Newport Harbor on Friday.
“Our defense has been really solid,” San Marcos head coach Devin Uyesaka said. “The communication is getting better, and the ability to adjust on the fly has made it really fun for the players, but maybe even more fun for the coaching staff.
“It was a really good team win, getting it done on both ends of the court.”
Izzy Schow and Jada Ahmad spearheaded the offensive attack with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Royals will turn around and match up with Lompoc on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Orcutt Academy 60, Santa Ynez 50
The Pirates dropped their tournament game with Orcutt Academy on Friday in Lompoc.
Helina Pecile stuffed the stat sheet for Santa Ynez with 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and seven steals. Meanwhile, Rylan Agin dropped 12 points of her own.
The Pirates (2-1) will take on Newport Harbor on Saturday at 11 a.m. for the third day of the Lompoc Tournament.
Lompoc 51, Santa Barbara High 16
The Dons suffered a loss to the Braves in the second round of the Brian Ayes Classic on Friday in Lompoc.
Shea Gannon was Santa Barbara High’s top performer, hauling in 11 rebounds and playing strong defense in the paint.
“We finally started to run some offense and got some easier shots, which was one of our goals,” Santa Barbara High head coach Andrew Butcher said. “If enthusiasm won games, I think we’d be undefeated. We just have to keep chipping away with our execution and rebounding.”
The Dons will be back in action on Saturday against Orcutt Academy at 12:30 p.m.
