Santa Paula 20, Santa Barbara High 14 (OT)
The Dons dropped their season opener to Santa Paula in overtime on Thursday at Peabody Stadium.
“It was an exciting game that could have gone either way. It was really the difference of a few plays,” Santa Barbara High head coach Travis Mañach said.
The game got off to a bit of a slow start, as the Cardinals opened the scoring with just one second left in the first half to take a slim lead into halftime.
Santa Barbara High came out of the break with some momentum, getting a stop on defense and turning that into a score as Laila Hernandez found Alyssa Ortiz in the endzone.
The Dons continued to roll in the second half, taking their first lead of the game on another touchdown connection from Hernandez to Ortiz. Hernandez hit Shea Gannon for the two-point conversion to extend the lead.
Santa Paula tied the game in the fourth quarter, and the Dons couldn’t capitalize on a late interception by Gannon, which sent the game into overtime.
Santa Barbara High came up short on its first possession of overtime, and Santa Paula made them pay with a score on its first drive to clinch the season-opening win.
Camila Salcedo and Vanessa Esparza had strong nights on the defensive end, while Summer Maxwell was a standout on both sides of the ball.
The Dons (0-1) will look to bounce back when they host Cabrillo on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
