San Marcos girls lacrosse fell to Saugus by a score of 15-6 in a non-league matchup on Wednesday at Warkentin Stadium.
Saugus dominated the opening stages and never looked back, racing out to an 8-1 halftime lead. The Royals scored five goals in the second half, but Saugus maintained its comfortable lead en route to the win.
“Adversity reveals character, and even though we were down a lot early, everyone kept encouraging each other,” San Marcos head coach Paul Ramsey said. “I was really proud of that, even though we weren’t executing on anything in the first half.
“We didn’t give up, and we didn’t stop playing when we were in a position we’re not used to being in, a big hole like that.”
Josephine Grossman led the San Marcos offense with four goals, while Angelina Cruz and Mia Richmond rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece. Carly Grant saved six shots in the net for the Royals.
“Our defense got a lot of work against a quick ball movement team and that’s going to make us better down the road,” Ramsey said.
San Marcos (3-2), along with Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara High, will host the 24-team Gold Coast Invitational on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Royals will open play against San Juan Hills of Orange County.
Santa Monica 16, Dos Pueblos 6
The Chargers dropped their non-league contest with Santa Monica on the road on Wednesday.
After trailing by seven goals at halftime, Dos Pueblos trimmed the deficit down to four in the third quarter. However, Santa Monica pulled away down the stretch for the win.
Linnea Clapinski scored five of the six Charger goals, while Harper Carlson got on the board as well. In the net, Dos Pueblos goalkeeper Stella Lawler stopped 13 shots.
