Santa Barbara High came away with a 1-0 Channel League victory on the road against Rio Mesa on Friday.
“Tonight the girls showed up and played a complete game by dominating possession and controlling the tempo of the game,” Dons head coach Willie Sims said. “This allowed us to create multiple scoring chances but their goalie came up with some great saves.”
After a game full of defensive plays on both ends, Santa Barbara High scored the game-winner with 10 minutes left on the clock on an impressive header by Naomi Preciado.
The Dons’ clean-sheet effort was led by defenders Sofia Lopez and Madeline Savellano and goalkeeper Alice Sweeney.
Santa Barbara High will host San Marcos for Senior Night on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Santa Paula 2, Carpinteria High 1
The Warriors dropped a Citrus Coast League matchup on the road to Santa Paula on Friday.
The Cardinals dominated the opening half, scoring a pair of goals and holding Carpinteria scoreless to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The Warriors found more of a groove in the second half and scored in the 78th minute when Charlotte Stoops found Callie Labistour, who finished it to cut the deficit to 2-1.
However, Carpinteria couldn’t net the equalizer in the final minutes and suffered the loss.
“Having to play from behind the whole match it was a test of character and although we battled back to get on the board many players found it very difficult to get into any game rhythm tonight,” Warriors head coach Freddy Martinez said.
“But this was a playoff atmosphere match and now hopefully the girls will be able to look back on this match when things get tough in playoffs and know that we can rise to the occasion.”
Carpinteria (8-4-3, 7-2-1 CCL) will take on Hueneme on the road on Tuesday to end the regular season.
