Cate girls tennis dominated from start to finish en route to a 17-1 win over local foe Dos Pueblos on Tuesday in Carpinteria.
The Rams captured all nine points in doubles action and kept it rolling in singles, earning eight of nine available points.
“It’s great to get a first look at what the full roster can do,” Cate head coach Trevor Thorpe said. “Our singles lineup is the strongest it has ever been, which has already led to some great practices for our singles players leading into this match.
“We’ve also got a very experienced mix of players across our doubles lineup, including a few seniors who have been around since our CIF title run in 2023.”
The Cate duos of Lisa Hasebe/Kiki Chang and Gwendi Rogers/Edie Abbott each went a perfect 3-0, while Chelsea Newlove paired up with Elly Edwards for two wins and tacked on one more victory with Claire Tang.
As for the singles attack, the Rams got three wins from both Ivy Huang and Hade Wang, while Elizabeth Jayich went 2-0 in her matchups.
Dos Pueblos’ lone point came from Adhya Reddy, who picked up a 6-2 victory in singles play.
Cate will host San Marcos for another local matchup on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
Laguna Blanca 11, Carpinteria High 7
The Owls pulled out a local non-league victory over the Warriors on Tuesday in Santa Barbara.
“Laguna proved right from the start that they have a deep and talented roster as they beat the Warriors in a match that wasn’t as close as the score indicated,” Carpinteria High head coach Charles Bryant said.
“We had to fight hard for our close set wins, whereas Laguna seemed to win theirs by lopsided scores. They will be a tough team in the Tri Valley League this season.
Ella Osley dominated singles action for Laguna Blanca, winning all three of her matchups and dropping just two games along the way.
In doubles, the Owl duo of Maddie Osley and Tatiana Taylor shook off a loss in its opening match and bounced back with back-to-back convincing victories.
Meanwhile, the Warrior pairing of Emily Banks and Caroline Cooney went 3-0 on the day. Meanwhile, Sadie West and Ariana Cruz secured a strong 6-0 win.
Carpinteria’s Aubrey Alcaraz pulled in two singles wins, while Cailyn Gillen went 1-2 for the Warriors.
“Overall, we played fine today against a solid Owls squad,” Bryant said. “I am hoping we learned a few things from our defeat that will help us down the road.”
The Warriors (1-2) will take on Villanova Prep and St. Bonaventure next week.
