Carpinteria 18, Santa Paula 0

The Warriors cruised to a lopsided win over Santa Paula in their Citrus Coast League opener on Thursday.

“This was a great match for us, not because of the score, but because of how relaxed and free we played today,” Carpinteria High head coach Charles Bryant said. “It was the third match this week for the girls, but they played loose and easy.

“Their demeanor on the courts really said it all as they all seemed to play with smiles on their faces no matter the score.”

The doubles pairings of Charlotte Cooney/Aubrey Alcaraz, Mina Handall/Izzy Scott and Kacy Kramer/Yaretzi Moctezuma dominated, with Cooney/Alcaraz and Handall/Scott earning 6-0 sweeps in each of their sets.

In singles, Emily Banks, Cailyn Gillen and Caroline Cooney swept their three sets. Gillen and Cooney dropped just one game apiece, while Banks lost just four.

“Overall, it was fun for me to see them playing with freedom and yet pushing themselves and each other,” Bryant said. “It was a great way to finish a long week but they excelled in their first league match of the year.”

Carpinteria (6-1, 1-0 CCL) will play at Nordhoff to begin next week.

San Marcos 18, Oxnard 0

The Royals came away with a sweep of their own in the league opener on Thursday in Santa Barbara.

“Both Mast and Lowry have been working hard to diversify their gameplay and are starting to see some improvement,” San Marcos head coach Emily Carver said.

In doubles, the Royals lost just three games across their nine set victories.

“Oxnard was a test of ball control and patience for doubles,” Carver said. “We were able to focus on placement and accuracy instead of power.”
