Cate girls tennis continued their hot start to the season with a 15-3 crosstown rivalry victory over San Marcos on Thursday in Carpinteria.
The Rams are now 3-0 on the year after taking down local foes San Marcos and Dos Pueblos this week.
“I’m also happy with the way we managed some sickness that’s been moving through Cate over the last week,” Cate head coach Trevor Thorpe said. “We had a key singles player and a key doubles team missing from the lineup, but didn’t miss a beat. When players who don’t normally start heard their names called, they were ready to roll.
“As we’ve seen many times in the past, having the depth to put together a winning lineup when players are missing is key to making a deep playoff run in November; that’s our intention, and so far we’ve shown we have what it takes.”
Cate claimed all eight of the match’s nine doubles points, with Lisa Hasebe/Kiki Chang and Gwendi Rogers/Evita Ferrone each going 3-0.
Meanwhile, Edie Abbott/Jose Goldhirsh rounded out the Rams’ doubles victories with a pair of wins.
In singles, Elizabeth Jayich and Jade Wang each went 3-0 for Cate, and Claire Tang earned one win of her own.
On the other side, Leah Shenoda and Tate Jaeger each picked up a singles win for the Royals. The San Marcos duo of Jacqui Wilson/Fiona Weber earned a 6-4 doubles win.
“Today’s match helped us identify areas of growth that we can focus on moving forward,” San Marcos head coach Emily Carver said.
Dos Pueblos 17, Santa Ynez 1
The Chargers earned a lopsided victory over the Pirates on Thursday in Goleta, sweeping all nine singles points and taking eight of the nine doubles matches.
Dos Pueblos was in complete control in singles, winning all nine points without dropping a single game.
“After our loss on Tuesday against Cate, the girls were fired up for this match and their ability to stay consistent paid the dividend with a good win,” Charger head coach Alan Richter said.
