Dos Pueblos girls tennis emerged with a 13-5 crosstown victory over rival San Marcos on Tuesday afternoon in Santa Barbara.
The Charger doubles attack was a strength throughout the day, earning seven of the nine possible points to go along with six doubles wins to take the Channel League opener.
“The match did not disappoint as there was great tennis from both teams,” Dos Pueblos head coach Alan Richter said.
Atria Husein and Zella Cassidy each went 2-1 in singles for the Chargers, while four different duos combined for the seven Dos Pueblos points in doubles, including several comeback wins.
Meanwhile, San Marcos’ Tate Jaeger shined in singles action with a trio of 6-2 victories. The Royal duos of Jacqui Wilson/Fiona Weber and Myla Zeitsoff/Keira Shaffer each won one match.
Dos Pueblos will host rival Santa Barbara on Thursday, while the Royals will be on the road against Channel Islands on Wednesday.
Santa Barbara High 10, Ventura 8
The shorthanded Dons battled to a tight win over the Cougars in Tuesday’s Channel League opener in Santa Barbara
Keren Monroy paced the singles effort with a 3-0 day and just six games lost, while Maddy Savellano and Ryan Briggs each chipped in a singles victory.
Meanwhile, Lucy Kronberg/Iris Heckes cruised through a trio of wins while dropping just three games along the way. Kate Hashbarger paired up with Natalie MacFarlane and Stella Malina, earning a win with each teammate.
The Dons (1-3, 1-0 Channel League) will be on the road against rival Dos Pueblos on Thursday.
Laguna Blanca 11, Malibu 7
The Owls took down the Sharks in their league opener on Tuesday.
“I’m very proud of our athletes,” Laguna Blanca head coach Jeff Thompson said. “Every player stepped up and won the matches they needed to win. I really enjoyed seeing them all be challenged and respond with positivity and persistence. Everyone is growing as competitors and problem solvers.”
The Laguna Blanca No. 1 doubles team of Maddy Osley and Tatiana Taylor went 3-0 on the day to lead the charge.
Simi Valley 11, Carpinteria High 7
The Warriors dropped a non-league match to Simi Valley on Tuesday.
“Overall, our spirits are still positive,” Carpinteria High head coach Charles Bryant said following the loss. “The girls know we are close and they know that most matches down the road will be just as close.
“We need to improve our mindset and fight for each game, which can flip a few sets in our favor. If we are able to do that, we can turn our season around. “
In doubles play, the Warrior pairing of Emily Banks/Caroline Cooney went 3-0 and Sadie West/Cailyn Gillen chipped in one victory.
Aubrey Alcaraz turned in a 2-1 performance in singles action for Carpinteria, and Nathalie Hernandez rounded out the team’s scoring with her first career singles win.
The Warriors (1-4) will take on Villanova Prep next Monday.
