Dos Pueblos girls tennis edged out San Marcos with a tiebreaking win in Thursday’s rivalry battle in Goleta.
The crosstown foes were tied at 9-9 at the end of play, but the Chargers pulled out the victory with a 75-72 advantage in games won.
“It was one of those thrilling matches with all the lead swings and excitement when two evenly matched teams meet,” Dos Pueblos head coach Alan Richter said.
After San Marcos led 4-2 after the first round, the two teams exchanged points in the second round to bring the Royals’ lead to 7-5. The two sides continued to battle in the third until San Marcos had a 9-8 lead with one doubles match remaining.
The Dos Pueblos duo came through in the clutch, winning the tiebreaking set to send the result to games won, where the Chargers came out on top.
San Marcos’ Tate Jaeger continued her undefeated Channel League season in singles play with a 3-0 performance. Myla Zeitsoff secured the Royals’ other singles win.
The Royals’ doubles attack was spearheaded by the pairing of Taylor Ofner/Leah Shenoda, who battled their way to three wins. Jacqui Wilson/Kiki Yonemura and Kaisa Taggart/Fiona Weber each chipped in a doubles win as well.
“In the previous matchup we lost 5-13, so to make a midseason comeback to tie is a testament to how hard we’ve been working,” San Marcos head coach Emily Carver said. “We will continue to focus on doubles strategy as we prepare for a rematch against SB in a couple of weeks.”
Laguna Blanca 9, Malibu 9 (LB wins in Games)
The Owls pulled out a tiebreaking road win of their own over Malibu on Thursday.
After the two sides were tied at 9-9, Laguna Blanca was awarded the win with an 83-72 edge in games.
“These wins are possible because of our willingness to fight regardless of score. Our matches that lost still grabbed critical games that made the difference,” Laguna Blanca head coach Jeff Thompson said.
Santa Barbara High 16, Ventura 2
The Dons rolled to a Channel League win over the Cougars on Thursday in Ventura.
Santa Barbara High was in complete control in doubles play with a 9-0 sweep, while the singles lineup secured seven wins to close out the dominant win.
The Dons’ duos of Ryan Briggs/Sky Thomson, Kate Hashbarger/Violet Marr and Lucy Kronberg/Stella Malina dominated their way to 3-0 performances. Briggs and Thomson lost just one game in their first action as a pairing.
Meanwhile, Karen Monroy and Hali Wight each went undefeated in singles and combined for just 10 games lost, while Iris Heckes rounded out the scoring with a win of her own.
Santa Barbara High (4-4, 4-1 Channel League) will be on the road against Carpinteria High on Friday.
Santa Ynez 8, Atascadero 1
The Pirates raced past Atascadero for the win on Thursday.
Santa Ynez’s Claire Tipich, Clea Malkmus, Brooklyn Evering, Lexington Lanier and Malia Humphreys all won their singles matchups in straight sets.
Meanwhile, Tipich/Malkmus, Evering/Isabelle Esau and Johanna Dunlap/Elodie Hodge finished off the win with a doubles sweep.
The Pirates will host Lompoc High on Tuesday.
Foothill Tech 15, Bishop Diego 3
The Cardinals dropped a Frontier League match to Foothill Tech on Thursday at Ventura College.
All three of the Bishop Diego points came courtesy of a double sweep by Victoria Heredia and Annabel Liu, 6-4, 7-5, 6-0.
“I got deja vu symptoms watching their sets. Victoria was the hero in our CIF final, coming up with clutch shots at the biggest possible moments. Annabel was hitting out on returns and going after volleys so aggressively,” Bishop Diego head coach Peter Kirkwood said.
“Hats off to our singles players Lizzy Schneider, Layla Hernandez and Miranda Griffith.”
The Cardinals will be back at Ventura College on Monday for a matchup with St. Bonaventure.
