San Marcos girls tennis defended its home courts with a 12-6 win over Ventura High on Tuesday in Santa Barbara.
The San Marcos singles lineup of Tate Jaeger, Leah Shenoda and Taylor Ofner dominated from start to finish en route to a 9-0 singles sweep with just six games lost.
In doubles play, Kaisa Taggart/Kiki Yonemura went 2-1 for the Royals and Myla Zeitsoff/Fiona Weber earned a win to round out the scoring.
“I’m proud of how singles showed up today,” San Marcos head coach Emily Carver said. “We know there’s always a possibility to tie, so having all three players going for every game gives great support to the team.
“We still have some untapped potential in doubles that I hope to see over the next few weeks.”
The Royals will now head across town to clash with rival Santa Barbara High on Thursday.
Carpinteria High 14, Fillmore 4
The Warriors opened Citrus Coast League play with a convincing win over Fillmore on Tuesday.
Carpinteria High swept all nine doubles matches and added in five singles victories.
Nathalie Hernandez accounted for most of the singles points, going 3- on the day for the Warriors. Meanwhile, Sadie West and Ariana Cruz earned one win apiece.
In doubles, Yoselyn Aguirre paired up with Yaretzi Moctezuma to go 2-0 and went 1-0 with Cailyn Gillen.
The Warrior duos of Naima Palacio/Caroline Cooney and Ashlynn Greenburg/Antonia Pozzebon each went 2-0, while Emily Banks/Aubrey Alcaraz won their lone match.
“Overall, it was a great match for us, especially in doubles,” Carpinteria High head coach Charles Bryant said. “Fillmore always fights hard and I am amazed what their teams can do since they only have two courts to practice on and always have to play their matches on the road.
“In our league, they always show a ton of improvement over the course of the season and we look forward to hosting them again in a few weeks.”
The Warriors (3-4, 1-0 CCL) will be on the road against Hueneme on Thursday.
Laguna 9 (89), Thacher 9 (86)
The Owls pulled out a tight win over Thacher by way of games won on Tuesday.
“What a battle to the end. I am so proud of our team,” Laguna Blanca head coach Jeff Thompson said.
Cate 18, Malibu 0
The Rams cruised to a complete sweep of Malibu on Tuesday in Carpinteria.
In singles, Elly Edwards and Chelsea Newlove each earned two wins, while Evita Ferrone, Margo Nicholas, Elizabeth Jayich and Jade Wang all contributed to the singles dominance as well.
Claire Tang/Kiki Chang and Gwendi Rogers/Edie Abbott each cruised to a 3-0 day, while Ivy Huang/Lisa Hasebe and Josie Goldhirsh/Riya Mitera each picked up doubles wins.
“I really enjoyed seeing the girls take on different roles in the lineup today,” Cate head coach Trevor Thorpe said. “I think that, although there’s a lot to be said for specialization, giving some doubles players the room to roam the court and think out a singles match provides some insights that they can then take back into their usual roles.”
The Rams will compete in the Santa Barbara Invitational, beginning on Friday against San Marcos of San Diego.
San Luis Obispo 8, Santa Ynez 1
The Pirates fell to San Luis Obispo High on Tuesday.
Santa Ynez’s Avery DeJohn picked up the team’s lone point, winning her singles matchup 4-6, 6-3, 10-8.
The Pirates will host Arroyo Grande on Thursday.
