Santa Barbara High and San Marcos clashed for a crosstown girls tennis battle on Thursday, and the Dons emerged with an 11-7 win over the Royals.
The Santa Barbara High doubles attack was strong throughout the match, including a trio of wins with just two games lost along the way by Kate Hashbarger/Lucy Kronberg.
The Dons’ duo of Violet Marr/Kana Wolf went 2-1 on the day, while Sky O’Reilly Thomson picked up one doubles win with both Stella Malina and Ryan Briggs.
In singles, Keren Monroy and Haily Wight each won a pair of matches for Santa Barbara High and Iris Heckes added one victory of her own.
Meanwhile, San Marcos’ Tate Jaeger continued her stellar season with a 3-0 performance in singles play. She is now 12-0 as an individual after the first round of league play.
Leah Shenoda also earned two singles victories for the Royals, while the San Marcos pairings of Jacqui Wilson/Fiona Weber and Kaisa Taggart/Kiki Yonemura each picked up a doubles win.
Santa Barbara High and San Marcos will compete in the Santa Barbara Classic Tournament this weekend.
Carpinteria High 14, Hueneme 4
The Warriors capped off a 3-0 week with a Citrus Coast League win over Hueneme on Thursday.
“Hueneme is always a tough team to play,” Carpinteria High head coach Charles Bryant said. “We prepared well for them and knew some of the tendencies, which seemed to help especially in the tighter matches.
The Warriors dominated doubles play as Sadie West/Emily Banks and Caroline Cooney/Cailyn Gillen each went 2-0 and Yoselyn Aguirre/Naima Palacio added a win. Hueneme forfeited one doubles line.
In singles, Aubrey Alcaraz shook off a slow start and secured a 3-0 sweep, while Ariana Cruz tacked on two wins and Yaretzi Moctezuma went 1-1.
“Overall, we were able to get in gear at different times in the first round, so some of the sets were much closer due to the slower start, but I was happy with how the girls finished today. They closed out their sets well, never allowing the Vikings to get back in,” Bryant said,
Carpinteria High (4-4, 2-0 Citrus Coast League) will take on Malibu in a non-league contest next week.
