Bishop Diego girls volleyball rolled to a three-set sweep of Villanova Prep on Tuesday inside the Brick House, 25-15, 25-15, 25-19.
The Cardinal duo of Natalie Chan and Karina Urzua continued their stellar seasons with double-doubles. Chan ended with 20 kills and 16 digs, while Urzua collected 16 kills and 16 digs. Ella Fuentes chipped in seven kills.
“I threw a curveball at them tonight with a new lineup, and it didn’t even faze them,” Bishop Diego head coach Dillan Bennett said. “After a tough loss last Thursday, I wanted to see if we could tweak a few things to get a little more out of our role players.
“They are such a great group of kids; they just said sure and rolled with it. Special shout-out to Abbie Hubbs, who got a huge stuff block in the middle of the match.”
The Cardinals (13-5, 6-2 Tri-Valley League) will be on the road against Foothill Tech next Tuesday.
Santa Barbara High 3, Oxnard 0
The Dons earned a road sweep of Oxnard on Tuesday, 25-16, 25-18, 25-15.
The victory completed a sweep of the first round of Channel League play for Santa Barbara High (17-8, 4-0 Channel League).
While Blake Saunders’ 14 kills led the way for the Dons, Talia Yoshimi was not far behind with 10 kills of her own.
“Talia had a particularly nice night for us. She’s really stepping up and coming into her own on the right,” Santa Barbara High head coach Kristin Hempy said. “Tonight she got the chance to take a lot of swings and find some offensive success.”
Meanwhile, Jules Horton collected 24 assists and eight digs, while Paylin Marcillac served up six aces and scooped up 10 digs.
“Our serving was also strong tonight,” Hempy said. “Paylin especially was aggressive and gave us an advantage at the serving line.”
The Dons will now head into the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions this weekend, hosting San Clemente on Friday at 12:45 p.m. inside J.R. Richards Gym.
St. Bonaventure 3, Laguna Blanca 0
The Owls suffered a sweeping loss at the hands of the Seraphs on Tuesday, 16-25, 16-25, 22-25.
“We struggled to get into any kind of rhythm tonight and were on our heels from the start,” Laguna Blanca head coach Tanner Stevens said. “St. Bonaventure played really clean all night and made almost no errors, which made it tough to get anything going.”
Lauren Kenny was all over the court for the Owls with six kills and 10 digs, while Emma Bouvat-Merlin totaled 14 digs and Greta Alldredge served up three aces.
