Dos Pueblos girls volleyball opened Pacific View League action with a sweep of Channel Islands on Thursday in Oxnard, 25-12, 25-8, 27-25.
The victory marked the first-ever game for the Chargers (4-8, 1-0 PVL) in the Pacific View League, which is part of the newly formed Channel/Pacific View Association.
“It was a great showing for our first league game, and I’m excited to see what we can accomplish from here,” Dos Pueblos coach Emily Curry said. “This team is really starting to gel together and play as a unit. We’re learning how to trust each other, compete together, and find ways to win as a team.”
Charlize Welch shined on the outside for the Chargers with 16 kills, while Faith Harrison chipped in six. Emilene Newton ran the offensive attack with 28 assists and Mia Taylor added nine digs on the defensive end.
Dos Pueblos will host Rio Mesa for another league matchup on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Carpinteria High 3, Fillmore 2
The Warriors battled the heat on their way to a five-set win over the Flashes on Thursday in Fillmore, 20-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 15-8.
“With each game, our rhythm and camaraderie are getting stronger,” Carpinteria High head coach Evan Rowbottom said. “I am so proud of the girls for playing in those temperatures, and they were really excited to win our first league match.”
Cora Nimmons was all over the court for the Warriors, recording a monster double-double of 18 kills and 33 digs. Meanwhile, Harper Rowbottom hammered down 12 kills and Samantha Sanchez scooped up 33 digs
St. Bonaventure 3, Bishop Diego 1
The Cardinals suffered their first league loss of the season to St. Bonaventure on Thursday, 26-28, 25-19, 25-27, 13-25.
“Overall, we did not get off to a great start,” Bishop Diego head coach Dillan Bennett said. “Our serving was not what it typically was, and for whatever reason, we couldn’t work our way out of our funk tonight.
“After game two, I thought we might have a chance, but we made too many little mistakes that ended up costing us the third game. By that point, our energy level on the court and overall body language showed that we were done for the week.”
Karina Urzua filled up the stat sheet for the Cardinals with 34 kills and 35 digs, while Natalie Chan impressed on both sides as well with 13 kills and 16 digs. Brighton Montag also had a strong defensive game with 16 digs.
“Karina played her best overall match of the season tonight and carried the offensive load. She was all over the court defensively. She bought into our game plan of attacking a specific zone on the court, and she ran play after play to perfection,” Bennett said. “
We have more players who are capable of focusing and playing at a higher level, and we will need them to be active and present next week for three big league matches.”
Bishop Diego (10-4, 3-1 Tri-Valley League) will be on the road against Malibu on Monday.
Oxnard 3, San Marcos 0
The Royals dropped their Channel League opener on the road to the Yellow Jackets on Thursday, 25-19, 25-20, 25-23.
“There were a lot of positives tonight,” San Marcos head coach Eric Downing said. “In each of the three sets, we were leading up until around the middle and we kind of just checked out and we have to figure out how to finish games and win games.”
Harper Dees and Margaret Dekeayne led the Royals’ offense with eight and five kills, respectively. Bella Rashti stood tall in the middle with a team-high five blocks.
San Marcos will head up to the San Luis Obispo Tournament on Friday and Saturday before continuing league play next week.
