San Marcos girls volleyball continued their undefeated Channel League run with a sweep of rival Dos Pueblos on Tuesday inside the Thunderhut.
The Royals (19-3, 9-0 Channel League) controlled the matchup from start to finish for the win over the Chargers (4-19, 4-6 CL), 25-13, 25-11, 25-23.
“I am incredibly proud of the effort of our team tonight,” Dos Pueblos head coach Megan O’Carroll said. “The girls came out fighting and didn’t give up until the very last point. I thought we served super tough from the service line to get them out of system as much as possible.
“Our serve-receive line was on it tonight and passed great to get us lots of attacking opportunities. We put up a really solid fight against a very strong SM team.”
Cora Loomer led the San Marcos offense with 11 kills and just one error, while Charlotte Hastings collected eight kills of her own.
The duo of Avery Leck and Lila Westmacott turned in a solid performance running the Royals’ offense.
As for the Chargers, Addison Low’s 11 kills were good enough to lead the team and Maggie Squires chipped in five. Charlize Welch recorded four kills, eight digs and three aces in the loss.
San Marcos will be on the road against Rio Mesa on Thursday, while Dos Pueblos will host Ventura. Both matches will start at 6:30 p.m.
Bishop Diego 3, Cate 1
The Cardinals pulled out a four-set victory over their crosstown rival Rams on Tuesday in Carpinteria, 25-23, 17-25, 25-19, 25-23.
“We had a couple of people step it up a level tonight against a strong Cate team,” Bishop Diego head coach Dillan Bennett said. “When you play a team a second time around, you can game plan a little better and make adjustments. Tonight, we used a couple of players to come in and play specific roles.
“Kate Douglas was one who we needed to come in, serve tough and play scrappy defense. She did a great job tonight. Natalie Chan played and won her two tennis matches before playing tonight and took a ton of important swings.”
Sophie Otte hammered down 23 kills to lead the Cardinals, while Natalie Chan collected 14 kills, 11 digs and three aces. Karina Urzua paced the defensive effort with 19 digs.
“Karina, again, turned the match around late in game four with strong serving, good decision making, excellent defense and ended the match with a stuff block out of the middle position – not something many setters have done, but she made the most of the situation,” Bennett said.
As for the Rams, Oyin Opawumi led the team with 17 kills and Coco Kliman picked up 24 digs. Fallon Erickson and Elise Tsai each served up five aces.
“Bishop played a great match; they had several impressive plays and were disciplined throughout the night,” Cate head coach Jordon Dyer said. “We had some great moments, but Bishop outplayed us tonight.
“The good news is we have some aspects of our game that we can improve on and be better prepared moving forward.”
Bishop Diego (14-9, 4-1 Tri-Valley League) will take on Villanova Prep on the road on Thursday.
Santa Barbara 3, Rio Mesa 0
The Dons rolled to a sweep of the Spartans on Tuesday in Oxnard, 25-14, 25-17, 25-15.
“Everyone on the team contributed to this win and we were able to find offensive success with a few different lineup combos,” Santa Barbara High head coach Kristin Hempy said.
Kira Elliot led the team with nine kills, while Blake Saunders contributed all over the court with eight kills, nine digs and three aces.
Meanwhile, Jules Horton dished out 28 assists to go along with eight digs, and Paylin Marcillac scooped up 19 digs of her own.
The Dons, now 7-3 in league play, will be on the road against Oxnard on Thursday.
Foothill Tech 3, Laguna Blanca 2
The Owls dropped a tightly contested five-set match with Foothill Tech on Tuesday, 21-25, 25-21, 29-27, 18-25, 13-15.
“Tonight was a super fun environment in a high-stakes league match, but we fell just short in the end,” Laguna Blanca head coach Tanner Stevens said. “We struggled to get into a rhythm from the service line and had to work hard for each point.
“Both teams have gotten so much better since the last time we played, and they were a little better than us tonight.”
Sage Holcombe ended the night with 13 kills, while Lauren Kenny joined her in double figures with 10 and Maritt Blabey picked up nine kills.
Lolayna Redmond was strong on the defensive end with a team-high 24 digs.
