The Royals (2-0) will be on the road for a non-league contest against Oaks Christian next Thursday.
Santa Ynez 3, Bishop Diego 1
The Pirates pulled out a four-set victory over the Cardinals in Thursday’s season opener in Santa Ynez, 28-30, 25-11, 25-8, 25-16.
“While we have eight seniors, those kids have been battling for three years to crack the varsity roster,” Bishop Diego head coach Dillan Bennett said. “After graduating eight seniors, these guys are getting their chance at the varsity level this year and we’re really excited to see their growth.
“As a team, we’re taking the preseason to give every player a chance to see the court as we determine who can help us the most heading into the league play and the postseason. It is always a process rebuilding a team after 95% of the roster graduates, but it’s something our staff has plenty of experience with.”
Senior Sophie Otte was all over the court for the Cardinals, tallying six kills and three digs while playing three different positions. Senior Olivia Leflang added three kills and eight digs of her own.
The sophomore duo of Karina Urzua and Natalie Chan combined for six kills, 12 digs and two aces on the night. Meanwhile, junior Abbie Hubbs recorded four aces and five digs in her varsity debut.
“I think our players are excited to play free, have chances to explore their strengths, and learn about how they can best serve to put us in a position of success at the end of the year,” Bennett said.
Bishop Diego (0-1) will compete in the Coast Union Quad against Coastal Christian and Coast Union on Saturday.
