San Marcos girls water polo opened the Newport Elite Eight Tournament with a 9-7 loss to Mater Dei on Thursday.

It was a tight contest throughout, with the Royals holding a 7-6 lead heading into the fourth period.

However, Mater Dei dominated the fourth by shutting out San Marcos and finding the back of the cage three times to pull out the win.

Naomi Enright led the Royals in scoring with three goals while Lucy Haaland Ford scored two of her own. Marina Brown rounded out the scoring with one goal.

Charlotte Raisin made her impact felt by earning six drawn ejections and Serenity Stanfield registered six saves.

The Royals, now 20-4 on the season, will take on Oaks Christian on Friday at 10:05 a.m. and will follow that up with a matchup against The Bishop’s at 2 p.m.

Carpinteria 8, Nordhoff 5

The Warriors came away with a three-goal win on the road over Nordhoff.

Carpinteria got out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to goals by Mina Handall and Lilli Nemetz and they continued to build that lead throughout the game, holding a 7-2 advantage in the third quarter.

Nordhoff then began to mount a bit of a comeback effort late, but the Warriors held them off and squeaked out the win.

“Our girls need to have more focus and intensity and be able to execute no matter who they are facing,” Carpinteria coach Jon Otsuki said. “The score does not reflect the play of the game, we dominated in almost all aspects of the game except the score.”

Giulia Piccoletti led all scorers with three goals while Nemetz and Hazel Dugre scored three goals apiece. Handall rounded out the scoring with her goal.

Defensively, Allison Banks had six saves, Dugre collected four steals and Picoletti picked up three steals and two field blocks.

“I was pleased with our help defense when we needed it,” Otsuki said.

Carpinteria will take on Channel Islands on the road on Friday.

Dos Pueblos 12, Long Beach Millikan 1

The Chargers kicked off the SoCal Championships with a lopsided win over Long Beach Millikan.

It was all Dos Pueblos from the beginning, as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Megan Garner continued her strong play in the cage, making 12 saves while allowing just one goal.

On the other end of the pool, Addison Parrish, Kyra Jones, Frankie Court and HanaLora Abel each scored twice to lead the offensive attack.
