Santa Barbara High girls water polo picked up a pair of wins at the SoCal Championships on Saturday, taking down Long Beach Millikan and Mira Costa.
In the first matchup against Long Beach Millikan, the Dons jumped out to a 5-0 first-quarter lead and cruised to the 8-3 win from there.
Layla Szymczak and Addie Sweeney each turned in multi-goal performances with four and three goals, respectively. Yharai Casas scored the other goal while Nalani Yim collected 13 saves, three steals and two assists.
In their second matchup of the day, Santa Barbara High took down Mira Costa by a score of 7-2.
Szymczak led the charge once again with four goals and three drawn exclusions. Sweeney chipped in two more goals while Stella Gray rounded out the scoring. Yim tallied 14 saves and four steals in the strong defensive showing.
The Dons will host Buena in the first round of the Channel League Tournament on Wednesday.
San Marcos @ Newport Elite 8 Tournament
The Royals dropped their final two games at the Newport Elite 8 tournament to Foothill and Mater Dei, finishing in fourth place.
In the semifinal matchup against Foothill, San Marcos was bested in a back-and-forth affair, 6-5.
Charlotte Raisin had a great all-around performance with two goals, four ejections drawn, four steals and a field block. In the cage, Serenity Stanfield registered eight saves.
Later in the day, the Royals fell to Mater Dei in the third-place matchup, 11-9.
Naomi Enright tallied three goals and an assist while Lucy Haaland-Ford picked up two goals, two ejections drawn and four steals.
“My girls definitely battled this weekend but this team is arguably one of the most consistent teams I’ve coached in terms of playing teams competitively and never giving up or backing down,” San Marcos coach Chuckie Roth said.
The Royals, 22-6, will await the winner of Santa Barbara and Buena in the Channel League semifinals on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Santa Barbara High.
