A GoFundMe account has been set up for the family of a 16-year-old girl who was struck by a train and killed Monday near Santa Barbara.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday identified the victim as Shylah Alexander of Goleta.

Shylah was struck at about 9 a.m. Monday by a southbound Amtrak train in the area of the 4500 block of Hollister Avenue, near the former Juvenile Hall.

She was a student at San Marcos High School, according to a statement from the Santa Barbara Unified School District.

“She wowed us with her creativity and talent, she soothed us with her smile and she gave the best hugs,” according to a message on the GoFundMe page. “We will miss you more than we can say.

“Please cherish your loved ones. You never know when it’s going to be the last hug, the last smile and the last laugh. Keep us in your prayers and thank you for your help.”

Without naming the girl, school district Superintendent Hilda Maldonado issued a statement saying, “It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to inform you that we have lost one of our San Marcos students today.”

Maldonado said emotional support was being offered to students and staff at San Marcos and throughout the district, and that anyone needing help should reach out to school administrators.

“Please know that we care about all of our students, families, teachers and staff,” Maldonado said. “If there are any additional ways we can support you during this difficult time, please let us know. We are heartbroken over this loss.”

As of Wednesday morning, the GoFundMe account had received $13,400 of a $20,000 goal.

Details on services for Shylah were pending Tuesday night.
