A Goleta man who was severely injured last week when he was struck by a bus in Ventura is suspected to survive, according to the Ventura Police Department.

The victim — Jose Campos Estrada, 64 — was being treated at Ventura County Medical Center, police Cmdr. Ryan Weeks told Noozhawk on Tuesday.

Estrada was riding his bicycle westbound on Telegraph Road, near Joanne Avenue, at about 9:50 a.m. on Thursday when he was overtaken by a Ventura County Transportation Commission bus, according to police.

The bus collided with the bicycle’s handlebars, knocking Estrada to the ground, police said, adding that the vehicle’s rear wheels then ran over the cyclist.

A motorist who was traveling behind the bus observed the collision and stopped to render aid to Estrada, who suffered major injuries to his lower body, police said.

Investigators were able to locate the bus driver — identified by police as Edgar Eduardo Landeros, 33, of Oxnard — who allegedly left the scene.

He was arrested and booked into the Ventura County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, police said.

According to jail records, Landeros posted bail and was released from custody Thursday night.

He is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Ventura on Oct. 5 for arraignment.
