Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Goleta man Friday on suspicion of multiple child sex crimes, spokeswoman Raquel Zick said.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office detectives began investigating a case regarding lewd images of children in April and identified Shaun Donald Hertlein, 42, as a suspect, Zick said in a statement Monday.

Hertlein was arrested on suspicion of multiple felonies including sending sexual images to a minor, communicating with a minor with the intent to commit a crime, and possession of obscene images of a child, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives said Hertlein worked with children at a Goleta church on the 5800 block of Cathedral Oaks Road, and as an assistant coach for freshman boys football. His occupation is listed as pastor in Sheriff’s Office arrest records.

Hertlein was booked into custody at the Main Jail in Santa Barbara on Friday and remained there with a bail of $500,000 as of Monday.

The Sheriff’s Office is looking for additional survivors who may have had contact with Hertlein, Zick said. Anyone with knowledge of additional allegations connected to Hertlein can contact Detective F. Arnoldi by phone at 805.681.4150. Residents can also submit an anonymous tip by visiting sbsheriff.org/home/anonymous-tip or by calling 805.681.4171.

“Detectives understand that survivors may have cause to be reluctant to come forward. We would like survivors to know that Sheriff’s detectives coordinate closely with the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office, Victim-Witness Program to ensure the needs of survivors are not overshadowed by the focus on the investigation and prosecution of the accused,” a press release for the Sheriff’s Office stated.
