The Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office filed charges Tuesday against two Goleta residents in connection to a stabbing on Upper State Street earlier this month.
Eduardo Zermano, 36, has been charged with one felony count of attempted murder with premeditation and deliberation for allegedly stabbing a man on the 3100 block of State Street on April 6.
Alexis Garcia, 37, was charged for being an accessory after the fact, according to Deputy District Attorney Tate McCallister.
Zermano, who police identified as Zermano-Arzate, also faces special allegations that he used a knife in the commission of the crime, causing great bodily injury to the victim. He is also accused of committing the crime while out on bail in other cases and committing the crime after being convicted of two prior serious or violent felonies, according to McCallister.
Santa Barbara Police detectives arrested Zermano and Garcia in Carpinteria on Saturday. Detectives believe Zermano stabbed a adult male victim multiple times in the April 6 incident and then left the scene.
The victim was taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in critical condition with multiple stab wounds, police Sgt. Bryan Kerr said. Detectives discovered that the victim had allegedly been involved in a fight with numerous people and was stabbed in the street shortly after 2 a.m., according to Kerr.
Zermano-Arzate appeared in court on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to all charges and special allegations. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 21 at 8:30 a.m. He is currently being held in the Santa Barbara County jail without bail, according to McCallister.
Garcia is out on bail and is scheduled to appear in court on June 13.
