Allan Hancock College Athletic Director Kim Ensing said Wednesday that her school has opted in for the California Community College Athletic Association’s Spring 1 sports season.
However, she acknowledged that whether Hancock will have any opponents to play in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic is an open question at this point.
The first opt in/opt out date for CCCAA schools concerning Spring 1 sports is Friday. The Spring 1 season includes football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s water polo, women’s volleyball, and wrestling.
Those sports would play 70% of their seasons and begin competition in the first two weeks of February and conclude in April.
“Our board of supervisors voted unanimously to opt in for sports,” Ensing said. “We already are aware that many schools across the state have opted out.”
The pandemic has ravaged the state in recent weeks, and Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a stay-at-home order.
Ensing said that the CCCAA plans to hold a meeting Friday and a follow-up meeting Monday.
“There should be a decision Tuesday” as to whether the CCCAA will give the go-ahead for a Spring 1 sports season, Ensing said.
Santa Barbara City College decided two weeks ago to opt out of playing sports in the Spring 1 season.
The entire South Coast Conference opted out. Two SCC members, Mt. San Antonio College and East Los Angeles College, were on Hancock’s 2020 football schedule. College of the Canyons, another school on the Bulldogs’ football schedule, also opted out of the Spring 1 season.
The opt in/opt out statuses of Ventura, Bakersfield, Moorpark and Oxnard have to be determined.
