The Allan Hancock College spring sports season 1 teams are set — for now, anyway — to play a limited 2021 schedule.
“We hope to play a little basketball, a little soccer,” said Hancock athletic director Kim Ensing, who added that spectators will not be allowed at games due to state and county health orders during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’ve formed an alliance with Taft, Cerro Coso, Antelope Valley, College of the Sequoias and Cuesta for Spring 1 sports,” she said.
Many of the Bulldogs’ traditional rivals — such as Santa Barbara City College and Ventura College — opted out for the Spring 1 season.
The Hancock women’s and men’s basketball squads are set to open their respective abbreviated schedules with a March 5 home doubleheader against Cuesta. The Hancock women tentatively have a nine-game schedule and the men have eight games planned.
Hancock’s men’s soccer team tentatively has a six-game schedule and the women a four-game slate. The squads will open with a March 12 home doubleheader against Bakersfield.
As far as the prospect for any Hancock football during the Spring 1 season, “We’re hoping to schedule a scrimmage or two, but that would be it,” Ensing said. “It’s undetermined at this point if we will be able to schedule a (football) scrimmage.”
Hancock named former veteran assistant Seth Damron in 2020 to replace Kris Dutra as head coach. Dutra stepped down after a run that lasted from 2001-2020. His reign ended with three straight Pacific League championships.
Ensing said pre-season workouts for Spring 1 and Spring 2 teams will start this week.
The Spring 2 sports include baseball, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s swimming and men’s golf.
The first Hancock men’s swim team is scheduled to make its debut on April 16 at the Larry Barrate Preview at Ventura College.
The Hancock baseball team has a 25-game schedule while the softball team has a 16-game schedule. The Hancock baseball team is slated to open April 10 at home against Moorpark. The softball team will debut April 22 at Ventura.
The California Community College Athletic Association said there would be no state championships for Spring 1 or Spring 2 sports.
