Dr. Hans Miller Gregersen passed away on June 24, 2026, in Solvang at the age of 87, after an extended illness. Hans was the grandson of Rev. Jens Gregersen, one of Solvang’s three founders, and first pastor of the Bethania Lutheran Church in Solvang.

Hans was born Feb. 9, 1938 in Pasadena, California. He and his brother Erik shared wonderful memories of trips as youngsters to the Gregersen Ranch in Ballard Canyon, where both brothers eventually returned following retirement.

After World War II, Hans spent seven formative years in Denmark, an experience that helped shape his lifelong curiosity for the wider world.

Earning a Ph.D. in natural resources economics, Hans became known internationally as a leading voice in forest economics, and focused his lifelong work on forestry, water, and land use.

He challenged others to think broadly and work together to solve complex issues and took special pride in harnessing his extraordinary skills to help  institute land rights for indigenous peoples worldwide.

As a professor at the University of Minnesota, Hans mentored generations of students over the course of his career.

To his children, grandchildren, and students, Hans was a consummate teacher. His familiar mantra, “Upward and onward,” demonstrates his eternal positivity. His kindness and penchant for mutual understanding and respect remains an example for us all.

Hans is survived by his wife of 35 years, Wendy McDowall Gregersen; son Kirk Gregersen (Sondra) of Seattle, Washington, and their children Theo and Lucy; daughter Kira Steiner (Todd) of Madison, Wisconsin, and their children Hanna and Max; stepsons Dan McDowall (Alix) and Steven McDowall (Lynne); step-grandchildren Ryler and Alina; brother Erik Gregersen of Solvang.

Hans was preceded in death by his first wife Ann B. Gregersen.
