The National Weather Service has extended its heat advisories for parts of Santa Barbara County, with some areas expected to reach up to 100 degrees over the next few days.
Heat advisories are in effect through 8 p.m. Friday in the Santa Barbara County interior mountains and in the Santa Ynez Valley.
“If you want me to say huge cooling trends coming in, you’ll be disappointed,” said John Dumas with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.
Dumas told Noozhawk that there will be warmer than normal temperatures through Sunday, with temperatures around 80 degrees in Santa Barbara and slightly cooler in Santa Maria, with temperatures forecast to be in the mid-70s to 80 degrees.
The Santa Ynez Valley is expected to remain hot over the next couple days with highs around 100 degrees, dropping a few degrees to 96 degrees on Sunday.
There is some cooling anticipated for next week, with temperatures dropping a couple degrees per day on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with Wednesday expected to be about 75 degrees in Santa Barbara, Dumas said.
Dumas added that there are wind advisories for the southwest coast of Santa Barbara County from 9 p.m. Thursday through 3 a.m. Friday, and again through Friday night.
The National Weather Service is forecasting north winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour with gusts up to 45 miles per hour during these wind advisories.
Dumas said that with the hot and dry conditions — which he is calling “weak sundowner conditions” — there is an elevated risk of fires spreading quickly if one starts.
