A Red Flag Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service Los Angeles, effective noon Thursday Sept. 7 through 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7.
The warning is a result of anticipated extreme heat, dry conditions, and gusty sundowner winds that are expected to affect the foothills and mountains of southern Santa Barbara County, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
Sundowner wind events are expected on Thursday and Friday nights and may impact the entire South Coast, not just the more sparsely populated western areas.
A Red Flag Warning signals critical fire weather conditions are either imminent or occurring. The combination of strong winds, low humidity and high temperatures creates an environment where extreme fire behavior is possible.
If a fire ignites, rapid spread and intense fire behavior are likely, posing serious risks to life and property.
In light of the Red Flag Warning, residents are urged to take the following precautions to protect themselves, their families, and their properties:
- Familiarize yourself with the Ready, Set, Go program for wildfire preparedness at https://sbcfire.com/ready-set-go.
- Report any signs of smoke or fire immediately by calling 911. If using a cell phone, be sure to know and report your exact location.
- Avoid operating spark-producing equipment such as lawnmowers, chainsaws, and vehicles in dry grass or brush areas.
- Report any suspicious individuals or vehicles to local authorities.
